Leather Shoe Care
Quality leather rewards attention. With regular care, a good pair will hold its shape, colour, and finish for many years.
Rest between wears
Leather absorbs moisture with every wear. Give each pair a full day to dry out before wearing again — alternating between two pairs will roughly double the life of both.
Use shoe trees
Insert cedar shoe trees as soon as you take the shoes off, while the leather is still warm and pliable. They hold the shape, prevent creases from setting across the vamp, and absorb interior moisture. Unfinished cedar works best.
Brush after each wear
A soft horsehair brush removes dust and grit before it works into the leather and the welt stitching. Thirty seconds is enough.
Clean before conditioning
Wipe the uppers with a barely damp cloth, or use a dedicated leather cleaner for built-up dirt. Let the shoes dry fully at room temperature before the next step. Never apply conditioner or polish over dirt — it seals the grit in.
Condition regularly
Every ten to fifteen wears, apply a thin, even layer of leather conditioner or cream with a cloth or your fingers. Work it in, let it absorb for fifteen minutes, then buff with a clean cloth. Conditioning replaces the natural oils leather loses over time and prevents cracking. Less is more — heavy application clogs the pores.
Polish for finish and protection
Cream polish nourishes and restores colour; wax polish builds shine and adds water resistance at the toe and heel. Apply sparingly in circular motions, let it dry, then buff with a horsehair brush.
Drying wet shoes
If your shoes get soaked, wipe off excess water, insert shoe trees or stuff loosely with newspaper, and let them dry slowly at room temperature. Keep them well away from radiators, heaters, and direct sunlight — rapid heat drying makes leather brittle and causes permanent cracking.
Protect against water and salt
A water-repellent spray suited to your leather type helps in wet conditions. In winter, wipe away salt residue promptly with a damp cloth, as salt draws moisture out of the leather and leaves white marks.
Storage
Store with shoe trees in a cool, dry place with some air circulation. Use the dust bags or boxes they came in. Avoid plastic containers, which trap moisture and encourage mould.
Suede and nubuck
These need a different routine. Use a suede brush to lift the nap and a suede eraser for marks. Never apply cream or wax polish, and keep them away from water — a suede-specific protector spray is the right preventative.
Resoling
Welted shoes can be resoled when the outsole wears through. Address it before the wear reaches the welt itself, and a good cobbler can extend the life of the shoe considerably.
